L'elmo d'oro sembra l'anticipazione di quello che per Tolkien sarà l'Unico Anello, un simbolo di potere assoluto che finisce per divenire ossessione di chi lo detiene. Magnifiche le scene dove il nuovo detentore ogni volta finisce per cedere alle lusinghe del diritto di divenire sovrano. Capolavoro. 9,5 |

Arte squisitamente abile nel rendere protagonista una natura solenne e realistica, resa in maniera eccellente, come le scene nel gelido mare costellato di iceberg dimostrano: una delizia per gli occhi.
Spettacolare caratterizzazione a più livelli di Paperino, che non solo bilancia il suo caratteraccio e la sua famosa competenza transitoria, ma fornisce anche una motivazione credibile per la sua irritabilità. Inattesa e inquietante la metamorfosi di Paperino una volta indossato il cimiero "maledetto": uno sviluppo che Barks riesce a portare a estremi notevoli, con riflessioni etiche, suggestioni mitologiche da delirio, e una sbalorditiva risoluzione a pesci in faccia.
Ottima gestione di QQQ, che riescono a essere sia tipici ragazzini svogliati e ignorantelli, sia solerti e ingegnose GM quando serve (per esempio per trasformare un icerberg in un natante). Favolosamente inattesa la risoluzione finale in cui vediamo comunque una traccia del contagio del cimiero che permane in uno di loro!
Se proprio vogliamo trovare un difetto, possiamo dire che Azure Blue e l'avvocato Sharky, col loro abbigliamento da ufficio newyorkese, e l'età che sembra piuttosto avanzata, sono poco credibili come avventurieri a bordo di barche sempre più piccole. Bene comunque la satira del latinorum degli avvocati (e in generale la messa alla berlina della categoria): è venuta prima questa gag, o quella dello Snoopy principe del foro di Charles Schultz? |

I can name at least 3 reasons why this deserves the number 1 spot: 1. Jocus Focus Hocus, meaning that this is a really great adventure story. The scenery is beautiful and the story is well planned out, well executed and whatever else you can do well. 2. Carlus Barksus Greatus meaning that it explores the theme of greed (the heroes are just as bad as the villain, just without the evil look) without taking this too seriously, making Donald's plans to own the air at the same time hilarious and disturbing. Fiddelibus Borlus Babbelus, meaning that the lawyer is the best. Enough said. |

Dopo la Stella del Polo e il mistero degli Incas (bè, qui al secondo posto c'è la dollarallergia, ma a me piace mille volte di più la mitica storia delle uova quadrate) La prima tavola offre un ottimo spunto: Barks al contrario degli italiani, disegna Paperino come un papero principalmente attivo, che cerca avventure (dopo tutti gli usi spesso spropositati che gli italiani hanno fatto della sua pigrizia, risulta ben difficile crederlo, ma dobbiamo ricordarci che questa è una storia di quasi settant'anni fa, quando i fumetti Disney di Paperino si contavano sulle dita di due mani.) Dopo un inizio apparentemente semplice che lascia intendere una storia buona, ma dimenticabile arriva il colpo di genio che Barks inserisce in diversi punti in quasi tutte le sue storie. Azure Blue, discendente di Olaf l'Azzurro vuole diventare il padrone del Nord America, perché a quanto pare essa era stata scoperta proprio da lui, nel 920 d.C. (avevo sentito qualcosa del genere anch'io, ma mi ricordavo un 952) spalleggiato dal serissimo (ma che a me ha fatto crepar dal ridere) avvocato Sharky. Lo svolgimento è molto avventuroso, ma la cosa più entusiasmante è la fine: l'elmo condiziona chi lo indossa dandogli la voglia di gloria e fama di potere e tutti cadono nel suo tranello (Paperino, il curatore, persino quasi anche un nipotino!) Merita un 10 e lode. |

Paperino è il mattatore assoluto di questa storia.
Veste i panni dell'avventuriero ed anche se forse è un abito che gli va un po' largo (personalmente preferisco il papero disadattato, pigro e sicuramente più umano presentato in tante storie), l'impianto regge.
Scioccante come l'elmo (il cui influente potere occulto ricorda effettivamente il famoso anello di Tolkiana memoria) riesca perfino quasi a soggiogare uno dei nipotini, anche se fortunatamente solo mentre sta affondando tra i flutti.
Esilarante e mefistofelico il personaggio dell'Avvocato, pronto a voltare faccia pur di asservirsi e prestare i suoi servigi al potente di turno.
Uno spaccato di vita molto reale, come d'altronde lo è la morale di fondo di tutta la storia: Il potere rende schiavi.
Disegni potenti e spettacolari, ma è un vero peccato che Barks non abbia pensato a grandi quadruple per rendere ancora più maestose le immagini del mare in tempesta e dei grandi Iceberg.
